10 minutes with Katia Beauchamp
In a saturated beauty market, it can be hard to find the right beauty products or simply know where to start. That’s why Birchbox is a smart, streamlined, and fun way to discover high-end beauty, grooming, and lifestyle products. Birchbox sorts through the clutter to send you what works and what’s worth the upgrade.
This month, Birchbox has teamed up with Glamour and their special July boxes feature some top brands and products, including our very own boscia B.B. Cream SPF 27 PA++.
We caught up with the super-busy Co-Founder of Birchbox, Katia Beauchamp – she told us the first beauty product she ever used, what would be the soundtrack to her life, and the hardest thing she’s ever done.
What was the first beauty product you ever used?
I think it was Lip Smackers Vanilla Frosting lip gloss. I also had an early experience with Nair- thanks for not letting me shave too soon mom. Agree that it is dangerous!
What’s the #1 most played song on your iPod? What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
I use Spotify and Pandora much more than anything I have downloaded. I am listening to my Adele and MGMT list a lot on Pandora lately. I tend to think that it would be the sound track to Thomas Crown Affair, but it is probably closer to Country Strong. My husband and I are both from Texas.
If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor? Why?
Sheryl Sandberg. Her career path and the level of impact she has today based on her position at Facebook is inspiring. Plus she has a family. I believe you can have it all, you just have to define what all is for you.
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
Does flying count? I mean flying like a bird, not in an airplane. If super-human is out, I would love to learn how to cook like a serious chef. Not to work in a restaurant, but for family and friends. I am an amateur, but love having people over today and my husband and friends might say that the best Mexican food in New York comes from our apartment.
What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
Probably obvious – Birchbox. It is one of the greatest things that has ever happened to me, but there are daily challenges; that is no different from any job, but what makes it hard is that it is so much a part of you that you cannot take anything lightly – from a not nice tweet to a stressed out employee, everything stays with you. Of course, by the same token the great moments are unmatchable and those happen daily too!
What did you do growing up that got you into trouble?
I loved spying on people and was big on hiding in closets, under tables, etc to get all of the non-juicy information from my family members. It became un-cute fast!
When was the last time you had an amazing meal? What was it?
In Jerusalem last week! We went to a restaurant called Yudaleh. Everything was inspired; we focused on the fish dishes based on the chef’s recommendation. In the middle of our meal he had a drum solo on pots and pans – delicious and so much fun!

Happy Mother’s Day from boscia!
On this special day where we celebrate MOM, we would like to wish all the fabulous mothers out there, a Happy Mother’s Day!
Happy Earth Day!
As we’ve all become more aware of how we can each be more environmentally conscious, this month we’re talking to Danny Seo. Danny is an environmental lifestyle expert with best-selling books, television programs, products, magazine and syndicated newspaper columns. Through all his efforts, including “how-to” lifestyle lectures, he is able to share the creative ideas that made him America’s leading lifestyle authority on modern, eco-friendly living.
Today, you’re an environmental lifestyle expert, but what did you want to be when you were younger?
When I was much younger, I would be in charge of decorating the family Christmas tree but wanted to do it in the most recycled way possible. So I fixated on ornaments that were either made from recycled or natural materials, but had to look a certain way, too. It was that fixation that led to me being hired to create holiday trees for a local department store (before I was 16) that helped me nurture my design skills. Those two worlds—design and sustainability—soon merged and become who I am today.
Your bio says that on your 12th birthday you founded the organization Earth 2000. What was the turning point in your life that made you want to become environmentally friendly?
I share the same birthday as Earth Day (April 22), so you can’t help but be influenced by the fact your birthday is marked with so much news about the perils of our natural world. Starting to think if I were born on Valentine’s Day, I’d be obsessed with love. Maybe.
For those people out there who want to take the first step to being more “green” what do you recommend?
Think Big. I think we all want to be green but think it means giving everything up. If you’re in the market for a new car, think about getting the absolute most fuel efficient one you can afford. Need a new fridge? Get the most energy efficient on the market because those suckers are on 24/7 and are real energy hogs if you get the wrong one. Don’t obsess over the small stuff…. it’s the big ticket items that matter most.

All hands on deck!
Have you ever seen a woman who’s so nipped and tucked and perfectly slimmed/plumped in all the right places that you can scarcely tell her age… until you look at her hands?
Our hands have a way of betraying age like no other parts of our bodies can. They wrinkle and sag and show sun damage and age spots – yet we can’t conveniently cover them with makeup, or botox them back to their youthful glory like we can with our foreheads.
This is why it’s a great idea to look at our hands as an investment piece – and to care for them with both today and the future in mind. That means moisturizing and protecting with SPF just as we do our faces. Fortunately, boscia‘s Daily Hand Revival Therapy SPF 15 does all this and more.
It’s got power ingredients Olive Fruit Oil for intense moisture, Wine Yeast for softness and elasticity, Mulberry to lighten existing sun spots and prevent them in the future, and Calendula Flower to soothe and combat free radicals. The SPF 15 protection keeps the sun’s rays at bay, saving your skin from the damage it faces each day. It absorbs quickly (no waiting for a greasy hand cream to dry required), and – added bonus! – is super nourishing and softening for cuticles as well. This could just be the luxurious/functional addition to your beauty regimen that you’ve been missing!
